Why the package number is misleading
Open a bag of grain and the calorie count on the label is almost always per 100 grams of the dry, uncooked product — typically somewhere between 300 and 400 kcal depending on the grain. But once cooked, that same grain absorbs water and roughly doubles or triples in volume, so the calorie count per 100 grams of the finished dish ends up noticeably lower. Mixing up these two numbers is the most common reason people either overestimate how many calories are in their bowl of porridge, or get needlessly alarmed by the label when the actual serving is far less calorie-dense than it looks.

These figures assume the grain is cooked in plain water with no butter, sugar, or milk added — that’s why the cooked ranges look fairly modest. Keep in mind that milk, butter, honey, or dried fruit stirred in afterward can noticeably raise the total calorie count of a serving.
Why cooking changes the numbers so much
It’s simple physics, not magic: dry grain contains almost no water, and during cooking the grains absorb liquid and swell. The same weight of dry grain turns into a noticeably larger volume of cooked porridge, simply because it now holds a lot of water. The total calories don’t change — they’re the same as in the dry grain — they’re just spread across a heavier finished product.

Portion size and what gets stirred into the bowl matter far more.
