Turkey tends to live in chicken’s shadow, but in terms of macros — protein, fat, and carbohydrates — it’s just as good a choice for anyone watching their diet, and in some ways an even better one. Here’s a closer look at what makes up the nutritional profile of different cuts of turkey.

Protein: among the leanest meats around

Skinless turkey breast is one of the cleanest protein sources available in the meat aisle. A 100 g portion delivers roughly 24-29 g of protein alongside a very modest amount of fat. Turkey protein is complete, meaning it supplies the full set of essential amino acids, and it’s easily digested, which is part of why turkey breast is a staple in high-protein diets.

Fat: it depends heavily on the cut

Unlike protein, fat content in turkey varies a lot depending on which part of the bird you’re eating. Skinless breast contains just 1-2 g of fat per 100 g — one of the lowest figures among common meats. Thigh and drumstick meat run noticeably higher, around 7-10 g per 100 g, and the skin adds even more fat if it isn’t removed before cooking.

Carbohydrates: essentially none

Breast vs. dark meat

Choosing between breast and dark meat (thigh, drumstick) largely comes down to a trade-off between leanness and flavor. Dark turkey meat carries somewhat more iron and zinc and tends to stay juicier during cooking, since the extra fat helps protect the fibers from drying out. Breast meat is the better pick for anyone minimizing fat intake, but it needs more careful cooking to avoid turning dry.

Turkey vs. chicken

Turkey is often compared to chicken, and the overall macro profile is genuinely similar — both are protein-heavy meats with moderate fat. The differences tend to show up in the details: turkey breast on average carries slightly less fat than chicken breast, and turkey meat has a denser texture that holds up well during long, slow cooking, which makes it a solid choice for braising or roasting whole.

Ground turkey: check the label

Ground turkey deserves its own note, since its macros can vary widely depending on which parts of the bird go into it. Ground turkey made purely from breast meat stays as lean as the whole cut, around 1-2 g of fat per 100 g. Ground turkey made from a mix of parts, or with skin included, can carry 10-15 g of fat per 100 g — not far off from fattier ground beef. It’s worth checking the label or fat percentage before buying rather than assuming “turkey” automatically means lean.

Vitamins and minerals beyond the macros

While turkey is mainly valued for its protein profile, it’s also a decent source of B vitamins, particularly B3 and B6, which support energy metabolism, along with selenium and zinc, both important for immune function. Dark meat tends to carry slightly more of these micronutrients than the breast, which partly offsets its higher fat and calorie count for anyone eating turkey for more than just protein.

Where turkey fits in a balanced diet

Thanks to its high protein content and low fat, especially in the breast, turkey works well for anyone building muscle, counting calories, or simply looking to diversify their usual protein sources. A serving of turkey with vegetables and a whole-grain side is a straightforward way to cover a meaningful share of daily protein needs without piling on calories, and rotating between breast and dark meat through the week keeps things from getting repetitive.
