Arugula Pear Salad

Arugula pear salad is a classic autumn pairing where arugula’s peppery bite balances the sweetness of a ripe pear, and blue cheese adds a salty, sharp edge. It’s a good example of how a handful of contrasting flavors can work better together than a long ingredient list.

For this salad, look for pears that are firm but already fragrant and sweet — underripe fruit will taste flat, while overripe pears tend to fall apart when sliced. If blue cheese feels too intense, a milder feta or goat cheese works just as well without losing the balance of the dish.

Toasting the walnuts briefly before serving is worth the extra couple of minutes — it makes their flavor noticeably more pronounced and their crunch more satisfying. The honey-balsamic dressing ties everything together, adding a sweet-tart note that echoes the pear beautifully.

This salad works equally well as a light dish on its own or as a starter before something heartier, like grilled meat or fish. Dress it just before serving so the arugula stays crisp and the pear doesn’t have time to brown.
