Banana Honey Oatmeal
2026-03-25

Banana honey oatmeal is one of the fastest, most forgiving breakfasts around — there’s no need for precise measurements, and it’s hard to get wrong. Mashing half the banana right into the pot naturally sweetens the oatmeal and gives it a creamy texture without any added cream or butter.
Stirring the banana in early, rather than just scattering fresh slices on top, changes the result: the cooked banana essentially melts into the oatmeal, adding gentle sweetness and flavor throughout, while the second half, added fresh at the end, keeps its texture and gives the bowl some contrast.
Honey is best stirred in once the oatmeal is off the heat and has cooled slightly, rather than into simmering milk — high heat breaks down some of honey’s more delicate compounds and dulls its flavor. Cinnamon adds warmth and, according to some research, may help moderate the blood sugar response to a carb-heavy breakfast, making this bowl a slightly more balanced start to the day.
This oatmeal adapts easily to whatever’s on hand: swap the milk for a plant-based one, and top with nuts, flax or chia seeds, or fresh berries. The variations are endless, but the base recipe stays reliably simple.
Ingredients
- 150 g rolled oats
- 400 ml milk (or a plant-based alternative)
- 1 large ripe banana
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- pinch of salt
- a handful of nuts or seeds, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- In a saucepan, bring the milk to just below a boil over medium heat.
- Stir in the oats and a pinch of salt, then reduce the heat to low.
- Mash half the banana with a fork and stir it in, cooking for 5-7 minutes, stirring, until the oats are soft and the mixture has thickened.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the cinnamon.
- Divide the oatmeal between bowls and top with the remaining banana, sliced.
- Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with nuts or seeds, if using, before serving.
