No-Sugar Date Energy Balls
2026-07-05

Date energy balls are one of the easiest ways to get a genuinely sweet treat with no added sugar — all the sweetness comes from the dates themselves, which are naturally rich in sugars, fiber, and minerals. There’s no baking involved, the whole thing comes together in about 15 minutes, and a food processor or blender does most of the work.
Soft date varieties like Medjool work best here — they break down easily into a smooth, sticky mixture that holds its shape well. If your dates are on the drier, firmer side, soaking them in warm water for 10-15 minutes first makes them much easier to process.
The nuts aren’t just filler — they add protein, healthy fats, and a bit of texture that keeps the balls from turning into a uniformly soft paste. Almonds and cashews are the most versatile choice, but walnuts, hazelnuts, or a mix work just as well. Cocoa powder brings a slight bitterness that balances the sweetness of the dates, while the oats help the mixture hold its shape and make the balls a bit more filling.
These are great to make ahead: they’ll keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, and considerably longer in the freezer. That makes them a solid option for a quick pre-workout snack, a healthier alternative to store-bought candy with tea or coffee, or a treat kids can help make and enjoy without the sugar spike.
Ingredients
- 200 g pitted dates (soft, Medjool-style)
- 100 g almonds or cashews
- 40 g rolled oats
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- pinch of salt
- 3 tbsp shredded coconut, for coating
Instructions
- If the dates are on the firm side, soak them in warm water for 10 minutes, then drain and pat dry.
- Pulse the nuts in a food processor or blender until coarsely ground.
- Add the dates, oats, cocoa powder, coconut oil, and salt.
- Process until the mixture forms a sticky, cohesive mass that holds together when pressed.
- If it feels too dry, add 1-2 teaspoons of water; if too wet, add a bit more oats.
- Roll the mixture into 12 balls about the size of a large walnut, wetting your hands slightly to keep the mixture from sticking.
- Roll each ball in shredded coconut to coat.
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up before serving.
