&lt;p&gt;In a typical diet, the body&amp;rsquo;s main fuel is glucose, which comes from carbohydrates. The keto diet cuts carbs drastically — usually to somewhere between 20 and 50 grams a day, far below standard recommendations — which forces the body to look for an alternative fuel source. After a few days of this restriction, the liver starts converting fat into ketone bodies, which become the primary energy source in place of glucose.
